If there’s a glass to describe as the world’s best wine glasses, it’s gonna be Spiegelau’s Authentis series.
The minimalistic design with its distinctive and slightly subtle break in the middle of the glass’ cup makes the glass easily recognisable.
Authentis has been developed in collaboration with a large number of the world’s best sommeliers and wine experts. The goal was to create the perfect all-round lens that can withstand frequent use. The glass is made with drawn stems and is designed to provide the perfect enjoyment of the wine in the glass. Naturally, the glasses are dishwasher-safe and sturdy, while also being elegent and easy to hold.
The global success of the series is partly due to the wide range of models. This provides space for the nerd to find precisely the glass that is optimal without the degree of detail getting over it. At the same time, the Authentis series is highly specialised and delightfully all-round.
Wide range
A particularly good example of what the series stands for is the champagne flutes. There are two versions of these: one with a slender and high flute form for the light, fresh sparkling wines and another with a slightly wider range for the more vinous and intense sparkling wines as vintage prestige champagnes.
There are also two white wine glasses. One small and one large. Again, the size of the glass is about the intensity and depth of the wine. Fresh and delectable white wines in the style of Muscadet and Alsace pinot blanc for the small glass and the heavier and more intense wines such as white Burgundy or strong overseas Chardonnay for the large glass.
At the red wines, we are up to three glasses. A bordeaux glass for the dry tannin-rich wines, a burgundy glass for the light aroma-driven wines and finally a glass simply called red wine glass. The latter is also known as “universal glasses” and is extremely popular among wine-tasting nerds and the restaurant industry, as you do not need to cover up with a full battery of varieties with this glass on hand.
When it comes to dessert wines, the two white wine glasses are really good. The same applies to the glass that goes under the name “tasting glass”. This glass is often used for standing tastings. It’s small and convenient to walk around with. And it works well with dessert wines.
Finally, the spirit glass is aimed at distillates of the matured varieties such as calvados, whisky, cognac, armagnac and so on. In other words, spirits for slow enjoyment after a lovely dinner.
And certainly not whether the series has a water glass that matches the design of the rest. With its straight edges, the glass clearly signals that it has not been conceived as a wine glass.
The most spectacular and fun glass from Spiegelau’s Authentisserie is the black tasting glass. Here we are in the nerdy corner. There are many fun ways to play with the senses by making small experiments with this glass. It’s actually harder than we think to guess the colour of a wine if it’s not visible.
And then there are the ingenious carafes that are not only beautiful, but also well-designed. They are available in two sizes.
One for one bottle and another for magnum bottles.
Test winner
The project of making the optimal wine glasses has succeeded so well that the wine glass wins tests in various wine media around the world.
This includes the highly respected French wine magazine La Revue du Vin de France. In November 2014, Spiegelaus Authentis’ 42 cl white wine glass won a test with a large and very strong field of wine glasses.
Spiegelau Authetis has also been selected as the wine glass of choice by the German Sommelier Association.
This is simply the most recognised and most commonly used glass among winemakers.
We dare to say that any wine nerd you ask recognises the name Spiegelau Authentis.
Recognising and appreciative, of course.
